Invitation to using the Report
Card On Demand Service
This is an innovative service which aims to better manage students'
progress in using the Online Quiz, to reduce the workload of teachers
and to save precious class time in daily assessments. It allows
students to assess themselves without the constraints of space
and time.
Teachers using this service may reserve a small percentage
(e.g. 5%) of the overall assessment using the question
bank in this web site. Ask your students to carry out the Online
Quiz Exam by themselves before a certain date. With the teacher's
account, you can obtain report cards of all your students by clicking
a button.
Application to the Online Quiz for Physics at A Level is welcome!
Teachers who are interested in this service please provide
us with the following information:
Name and email address of
teacher(s)
School name and school code (max. 10 characters)
Name, class, registration number1and email address2of students
Please type the information of your students in a FoxPro
DBF file, MS Access database file (MS Access 97) or a MS
Word document.
1 Registration
number is a unique number used in SAMS (School Administration
and Management System of Education Department). Please
ask the SAMS Administrator of your school for help.
2 email addresses
of students are necessary because the userID3
and password of students are sent to the students
individually. This would help to decrease the clerical
workload of teachers.
3 The userID
would be in the format xxxyyyyyy, where xxx is the
school code and yyyyyy is the students' registration
number.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Do I need to mark the paper?
No. This is the advantage of using Information Technology. Marking
are all done by the computer automatically. Students are given
the correct answers immediately after they submit their answers.
How can I know whether my students have attended the OnLine
Quiz?
The report card will show all the students of a certain class.
If they have not taken the quiz, their score is empty and is represented
by "--".
How can I obtain the hard copy of a report card?
Report card appears in a web page. You can print the report card
using the print facilities in your web browser.
How is the score calculated?
The full mark for score is 100. There are 20 questions in each
Exam. Each question scores 5 marks. Marks would be deducted for
students using extra time: 1 mark for each extra 10 seconds.
What are the format of report cards?
There are two types of report cards: A.
group by topics B.
group by students.
Both are similar to ordinary mark sheets. Their difference is
that the former is one sheet for one topic; the latter consists
of one single sheet with several topics for each student.
Information in the report cards include: date of quiz, number
of correct answer, number of questions attempted, number of questions
in the quiz, overall time used, extra time used and score. Report
cards can also be printed with all the three attempts by the students
or just the best attempt.
The report card generated by Report Card On Demand is different
from that by individual. Individual report card is arranged by
date and cannot be printed.
Could a student having done the Practice and remembering
the "answer numbers" perform well in the Exam?
This is almost impossible. Not only do the questions appear in
random, but the options would also be shuffled. Students cannot
simply remember the options and attempt the Exam using this piece
of information. They must fully understand the questions before
they can give a correct answer in the Exam.
How can I guarantee that the quiz is done by the students
but not by others?
The answers to this questions are several folds:
Firstly, students cannot copy answer from their neighbours. This
is because the questions in two machines come out in different
orders and the options are also different.
Secondly, a student helping another one to do the quiz has to
sacrifice a lot of time. This is not simply sharing the answers
with the neighbour. But, instead, to repeat the quiz once again
(or even three times for each topic) for his/her neighbour. I
don't think anyone who are capable will be "generous"
enough to sacrifice so much to do something meaningless.
Thirdly, the Online Quiz should not be used as the only mean to
assess your students. It is not designed to replace traditional
test or examination. The Online Quiz is to encourage students
to study the subject in order to raise their standards. It may
be treated as an innovative form of homework.
Will the questions in the question bank be modified in future?
The questions in the question bank are never static. This is a
major characteristics of Internet. New questions will be put up
from time to time.
How many questions are there in the question
bank?
Our target is to put up an average of 100 questions for each
topics in 2000-2001. Therefore, for the 20 chapters in AL Physics,
there would be at least 2000 questions when the question bank
is fully established.
Would the questions used in Practice be also used in Exam?
Yes. In this initial phase, questions in the Practice would also
be used in Exam. When the database is fully established, some
questions which are designed for Exam would not appear in Practice.
Can you tell me more about the questions in the question
bank?
The questions are MC (multiple choice) type. They may be single
option or multi-option.
All the questions are conceptual. Very little, if not no, numerical
calculations are required. This reduces frustration of students
in doing lengthy calculations.
Diagrams are provided to help students understand the questions.
Simple English and short sentences are used throughout.
The questions are less difficult than the HKEA questions. However,
students without paying effort will not get a correct answer easily.
If a student has carried out the Exam using an account not
through the school, will their records be shown in the Report
Card?
No. The report card will only show the students whose accounts
are applied through the school. Students have to use the accounts
that are emailed to them after successful application by school.
