Experiment

Experiment E12    Law of Electromagnetic Induction (B)

Objectives
  • Study how the induced e.m.f. depends on the peak value and the frequency of the magnetic field
  • Learn to determine the phase relationship between two quantities using a CRO
  • Investigate the phase relationship between the magnetic flux density and the induced e.m.f.
Description
In this activity, you will use a search coil with a CRO to determine how the induced e.m.f. depends on the strength of magnetic field and the frequency. You will use double beam CRO to find the phase relationship between the magnetic field and the induced e.m.f.

In Experiment 1, you will vary the strength of the magnetic field by inserting a rheostat in series with the solenoid. The current in the ammeter indicates the strength of the magnetic field. You will study how the induced e.m.f. varies with the current.

Experiment 2 is similar to Experiment 1. Instead of varying the current, you will vary the frequency.

In Experiment 3, the CRO will display two waveforms: the original current in the solenoid and the induced e.m.f. Simply connect the Y1 and Y2 terminals of the CRO across the two circuits.
