Experiment

Experiment C09    The Focal Length of a Convex Mirror

Objectives
  • Study the virtual image formed by a convex mirror
  • Determine the focal length of a convex mirror using a convex lens
  • Determine the focal length of a convex mirror by graphical method
  • Learn the technique of locating virtual image by no-parallax method
Description
In this activity, you will measure the focal length of a convex mirror using several methods.

In Experiment 1, you will locate the center of curvature of the convex mirror with the help of a convex lens.

In Experiment 2, you will locate the virtual image formed by the convex mirror using no-parallax method.

Apparatus
convex mirror on a holder (focal length not greater than 15 cm) [1]
convex lens on a holder (focal length about 15 cm) [1]
metre rule / optical bench [1]
illuminated object [1]
translucent screen [1]
optical pin on a cork [2]
plane mirror on a holder [1]
