Experiment C07    Refractive Index by Tracing Light Rays

Objectives
  • Determine the refractive index of glass using Snell's Law
  • Determine the refractive index of water by critical angle method
  • Determine the refractive index of a glass prism by finding the angle of minimum deviation
Description
In this activity, you will study the refraction of light through a glass block and a glass prism.

In Experiment 1, you will find the refractive index of glass by the basic technique of measuring the angles of incidence and refraction. The path of light is traced by using several optical pins.

In Experiment 2, you will measure the refractive index of water by the critical angle method.

In Experiment 3, you will allow light rays to pass through a glass prism symmetrically so that the angle of deviation is the minimum. By measuring suitable angles, you will also measure the refractive index of the prism.
