Experiment

Experiment B01    Young Modulus of Copper

Objectives
  • Determine the Young modulus of copper
  • Study the elastic and plastic deformations of copper
  • Study the breaking stress of copper wire in relation to length and cross-sectional area
Description
In this activity, you will study the deformation of a copper wire under stress.

In Experiment 1, you will apply masses to the free end of a wire and record the extension until the wire breaks.

In Experiment 2, you will study the elastic deformation of another piece of wire and calculate the Young Modulus.

In Experiment 3, you will determine the breaking stress and how it is related to the length and thickness of the wire.
